‘Taliban won’t fight Pak forces in Waziristan’
Staff Report
MIRANSHAH: Local Taliban will not engage Pakistani forces despite continued US drone attacks in NorthWaziristan, Taliban commander Qari Gul Bahadar said on Friday. “We will not fight the Pakistani forces because by doing so we will be helping the Americans in Afghanistan,” Taliban spokesman Ahmedullah Ahmedi quoted Bahadar as saying in a press statement issued here. Ahmedi said Taliban would uphold the peace deal they signed with the government early last year. “We will not let the deal collapse,” he said. Bahadar, who is the top Taliban commander in the area, has voiced support for the peace deal on the heels of increased US drone strikes against suspected Taliban hideouts in North and South Waziristan. Meanwhile, masked gunmen kidnapped Save the Children co-ordinator Dr Mazhar from the premises of the Agency Headquarters Hospital in Miranshah. Doctors went on a strike after the incident. “We have decided to shut down all medical services until Mazhar is recovered,” Agency Surgeon Dr Jehan Meer told Daily Times. “Six masked gunmen came in a car with tinted windows and took Mazhar away in broad daylight.” Meanwhile, a paramilitary soldier was abducted near Mir Ali town, east of Miranshah. Sources said Taliban were suspected for the abduction.
